Our goal is not always to chase the hardest mountain treks or move every single day. Sometimes we want to slow down, stay longer in one place, and enjoy the mountains in a more relaxed way — especially when traveling as a family.
This summer, our choice was Val d’Isère. A place most people only associate with winter sports and the 1992 Winter Olympics. But once the snow melts, Val d’Isère transforms into a surprisingly calm, green and incredibly well-organized summer destination in the heart of the French Alps.
Wide valleys, crystal-clear alpine lakes, waterfalls, free cable cars, free public transport and endless hiking options — Val d’Isère proves that some places are actually better out of season.
Still wondering whether Val d’Isère makes sense for a summer trip? Jump to this section to see why it absolutely does.

Lac de l’Ouillette – the perfect family-friendly alpine lake
If there’s one place that defines summer in Val d’Isère, it’s Lac de l’Ouillette. A beautiful alpine lake located above the village, easily accessible by cable car and followed by a flat loop trail.
The walk around the lake is suitable for strollers and small kids, with picnic spots, mountain restaurants and endless reflections of surrounding peaks. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay for 30 minutes — and end up spending half a day.
Manchet Valley – waterfalls, meadows and silence
For those looking for quieter corners, Vallée du Manchet is one of the most beautiful areas around Val d’Isère. Wide meadows, streams, waterfalls and long views make this valley ideal for half-day hikes or slow family walks.
You can reach the valley by foot, bike or free shuttle, and combine it with a stop at one of the mountain restaurants along the way. It’s also one of the best places to spot marmots in summer.
Vanoise National Park – wild Alps just next door
Val d’Isère borders the Vanoise National Park, one of the oldest and most beautiful national parks in France. This protected area offers high alpine terrain, glaciers, lakes and wildlife — including ibex and marmots.
Hikes here range from gentle valley routes to demanding mountain trails leading deep into untouched alpine landscapes. If you want a true “wild Alps” feeling without crowds, Vanoise delivers.
